Why subscribe?

I’m sending you thoughts on the world as it is, or as it seems to me. The title of this Substack, Differ We Must, is also the title of my forthcoming history of Lincoln—his life story as told through his meetings with people who differed with him. I think that dealing with people who disagree is one of the challenges of our time, so I am trying here to face the same problem in the present day.

I’ll be honest with you. Staying up to date can be overrated. The “latest news” is not always informative. If you miss a post here, you will be fine. But there is value in paying sustained attention to the world, and when you have time I’ll try to help with that.
