Three months ago I started Differ We Must as a companion to my forthcoming book of the same name. The book tells Lincoln’s life story through his meetings with people who differed with him, and its themes are relevant every day in my work as a journalist.
This space lets me share the resonances between present and past, as I find them.
Thousands of people have taken free subscriptions, and so far all posts have been free. I want anyone to be able to read them. (Also, I want everyone to preorder Differ We Must, which will be out before you know it and is available through multiple outlets here. Lincoln was open about his ambition, so I should be open about mine!)
Some people have chosen to pay for subscriptions. It’s a little like public broadcasting! Some pay to make it available to everyone. This is amazing, and unexpected, and I want to show my appreciation.
As a thank you, I’m trying an experiment. As soon as I post this, I plan to open a thread in Substack where paid subscribers may ask me anything. I should keep the thread open for a day or two so you can drop in when you have a moment. Who knows how this will go?
If you’re a free subscriber, it’s all good. I’m grateful you’re here. If this AMA works for people, I‘ll try a later one for all comers. And regardless, I’ll keep up the free posts.
If you’re new to Substack: Not to worry. I’ve never done a thread here either. But you can easily find Threads in the Substack app. The app is in your App Store and takes a moment to download. At the bar on the bottom, in the middle, you’ll see the dialogue bubbles that are highlighted here.
If I manage to figure it out, you should find me among the other chats by any other people you subscribe to!
Thanks again for your support. It means a lot.
